But what do you mean by "all your education?" What about people who do further degrees? Why should some get a right to stay in free education up to say the age of 25, whereas others have to go work at 18?

If it was just the elite that went to university there wouldn't be the issue, but in the modern world elitism isn't politically correct.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for these protesters as you know that in 10 years when they're all in their middle class jobs they'll be the first to complain about the next generation of students.

These cuts in education spending are not matched by a corresponding cut in taxes. So in effect we are all paying the same for less. This will continue as long as the govt think they can get away with it. I don't think they realised that there would have been so many protests, otherwise they would have picked a softer target less likely to react.

They = politicians and various members of the ruling classes that will be drawing down unfunded pensions.

Errr yes, that's what happens when you have out of control public spending and a government determined to cut the deficit. Or haven't you been paying attention to the last couple of years? We're all going to be paying the same for less for everything for some time to come.

I think that the fact that they attacked that car shows that they're quite indescriminate in who they take it out on. Whatever you may think about the royals what do they have to do with the reason these people are rioting? It's not like they decided to descend on Buckingham palace to demonstrate about the royal family, Charles and camilla were in the wrong place at the wrong time and got mindlessly attacked for it..

I don't think they're helping their cause by demonstrating in this manner. Of course they're angry but I don't think that they'll win in the end. Perhaps if they were to direct their attentions to those actually responsible for these cuts then they'd display a bit of justification in investment in their further education.

They need to be going after NUlabour and the failed banks that had to be bailed out not the royal family, not Philip Green and not innnocent Xmas shoppers or anyone else unfortunate to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I'm dreading when they decide to target the City and the Wharf - bonuses will be announced soon and I'm sure sparks will fly...

The point I am trying to get across (badly) is that they are not necessarily doing it very well. When you need to revive an economy, I don't think cutting education is the best way. Reforming education would be good, but not cutting.

The education spending should be more targetted. What skills does the country need? These are the skills we should be subsidising.

Cutting costs on higher education is targeted. Who says the economy is best revived by everyone not earning until they're in their 20s, or is best revived by a population who only want degree-level jobs?

Look at the countries who are developing rapidly in economic circles, or at the current established countries when they were attaining world power status... none have/had high levels of higher education.

I have to agree - unless you go into a job which actually draws on the knowledge and learning gained during the university course then a degree should not be a ticket to a job.

Cutting the education budget per se is not targetted. It does however need reforming. Whereas Labour's answer to everything was to throw (our) money at it, the current government seem to have one policy only. Cut. What is required is reform across whole areas of the public sector. However this requires ideas and thinkers within the government. Something that is severely lacking.

Unless you have control of your costs you cannot move forward with any further ideas.

You need a stable base to build on.

There will be a lot of areas targetted not just education - it is simply that students are the only ones with any free time to spend all day in the streets doing nothing.(except rioting).

Wise up - nothing is a right anymore especially when it has little benefit to the greater population.
