I hate Facebook. I hate the stupid games and distractions and stuff like Farmville, and the slugs who spend 20 hours there just to snare you in a "chat" the second you log in just to read your messages. But it's become essential to keep in touch with certain friends. So reluctantly, I'm in, for good.

Twitter suits me better. Vanity publishing (in my case); a chance to keep up with developments elsewhere if you follow the right Twitterers.

If you pick who you follow carefully there are some good links to technical info. And some amusing one liners too,

WHS. People who say they can't see the point of twitter usually haven't used it, or have seen other people using it like sheep. If you choose to follow a bunch of "celebrities" and the kind of moron who never posts about anything other than what they're eating then obviously it's going to show you nothing but garbage. To diss the medium on that basis is like complaining that the radio is pointless when you only ever tune it to the local pop-for-housewives station (pre-emptive non-apology: that's how such stations describe themselves behind closed doors), or that TV is rubbish when you only ever tune it to ITV3 (or ITV1, come to that).

If you instead choose to follow people you'd find interesting to talk to in everyday life (whether or not they're famous) then you'll pick up on interesting stuff. Most of the people I follow are people I know or have worked with, so the only stuff I see comes from them except for the odd occasions when they retweet something by somebody else - if it's worthwhile and a look at that person's other tweets suggests they're usually posting more signal than noise, I'll probably start to follow them too, which is the social bit of it.

Apart from tech feeds like MS's IE Team or the iPlayer Team at the Beeb, the only people (or entities) I follow who could be described as well-known are @bengoldacre, @timberners_lee, @Big_Ben_Clock, @VizTopTips, and @AlQaeda (just in case).
