A couple of weeks before the fourth season started on TV I bought the boxset of the previous series' and watched them - I'm glad I did.

Story aside, it is very similar in style to The Sopranos which is no surprise as the guy who created Mad Men also worked on The Sopranos.

It has a relaxed style and pace and is in no hurry to get anywhere.

That said, the plot always moves forward because the characters are richly developed.

If I had one criticism, it is that I wish they would inject just a little bit more humour into episodes.

I would recommend you watch it from the beginning but don't believe all the hype you hear about the programme as, IMHO, a lot of it is a bit OTT.

Mad Men is a very good series but is best discovered in your own time and not purely because the hype says so.
Well I might get round to it when I've finished with Dexter.

Great thing about Lovefilm as you can order the box sets and watch at leisure, without having to fork out for em.

Anyone know anything about The Event, starting on C4 next week? From the trailers it looks like maybe being along the lines of FlashForward et al... is that accurate?

Also, other shows I always wondered about:

        30 Rock
        Californication

        Comments/reviews?

Californication, a friend recommended it to me, must put it back on my list of stuff to watch. I've heard some good stuff about it.

            Love them both.

            30 Rock

Smart, pop-culture humour which can be very of the moment so watching it too long after it was originally broadcast in the US means you may miss out on some of the jokes.

It is also quite US centric in terms of its points of reference and if you have limited exposure to US pop-culture/news events then it will go over your head.

I think I'm fairly clued up with what's going on stateside but even I miss out on some of the jokes.

That said, I absolutely love this show for being so smart and silly in equal measure and thoroughly recommend it especially when they have big stars doing cameos.

Season 5 recently started in the US and this week they broadcast a live show.

As an example of its reference to current news events, there were jokes regarding the Chilean miners.

I'd imagine Season 5 will be broadcast here (Comedy Central) early next year so might be worth getting the DVD's of previous seasons which can be had for about £7 each.

            Californication

Another smart and, at times, cerebral comedy show which, like 30 Rock, has some silly humour moments.

David Duchovny is perfectly cast as the lead and the show is 'sex-heavy' in terms of reference and nudity content.

The recent series (3) was, IMHO, average but the first two seasons were excellent and again, I would definitely recommend them.

I believe, season 4 has either just started or is due to start in the US and won't be on here (Channel Five) until next year so now is a good time to jump into it.

I thought Richie Aprile was a sick fk too.

Cracked me up when they showed how he used to get his sexual kicks with Janice.

oh right yeah I've only met one person who has watched it don't why it isn't more popular over here

I've started to watch this- dunno if its my frame of mind but I can't get into it- I guess Lost ultimately let me down and I can't help think the Event may get cancelled like Flash Foward did so am reluctant to invest.

A new UK show Thorne is good though, on Sky HD.

What's it all about, got Season 1 and 2 available on-demand via cable.

20 episodes in season 1, worth the effort?
