I know we cannot be classed as inventors, entrepreneurs and wealth creators but as flexible/highly skilled workers do we contribute to wealth creation?

In reality a good number of us ended up contracting as we were perceived by permie employers as being too old/expensive, or too likely to avoid putting up with carp.

As for "doers and grafters" it's like this. You can work hard, or you can work smart. I think that contractors are more likely to work smart, but they can put in the extra effort when required. Where we do slip up sometimes (and obviously I don't speak for all of us) is in self-promotion or sales. If we had the right sales qualities, we wouldn't need the pimps. And how often have we seen ways to dramatically improve the efficiciency or costs in a business, but been unabled to convince the people in charge to change? That's where the major consultancies (sometimes) clean up.
