Yes. And if the IP address turns out to originate outside of the UK due to a 'hide my ass' style proxy. Then ban the owner as well.

Using IP addresses to identify users (whether for banning or other reasons) has always been full of fail because of NAT. Given the growth in the use of mobile devices, where it's possible that enormous numbers of potential users might all appear to be at the same IP address, it has finally become completely useless unless you can prove that the IP address can be tied to a single physical connection to a single machine used by one person.

As for "outside the UK": I've sometimes been using an O2 3G dongly thingy and had sites serve me the German version of their content, because O2 had NATted me through a German gateway. This happened when I was in Cambridge, which isn't part of Germany thanks to a few people putting a lot of effort in seventy years ago.

I find it mildly amusing that, just when GeoIP had finally started getting into a form where it seemed almost usable, it's also become redundant due to changes in the way end user devices have their traffic routed by the big networks

I joined this forum a few weeks ago after lurking for several months. During the months lurking I observed that pretty well every new poster was accused of being a sock puppet by many of the regular posters. It appears from anecdotal evidence that the board does have a history of sock puppets so I guess the accusations can be often be valid.

However I have now been an active member for a while and i am getting sick and tired of still being accused of being a sockie.

Is there something you can do to investigate and prove to the doubters that I am not a Sockie. Obviously if your investigation discovers that I a sockie I would expect no less than a public banning.

I would be grateful if you could update this thread with your findings.

While we won't ban you (because you haven't done anything wrong - just look at gricerboy) you are going to have to, in common parlance, 'Grow some'.

It is possible - even SY01 has done and I believe it's been the making of him.
