In Italy they ritually slaughter the animal pretty much the same as the halal method. You don't show the animal the knife, severing the main artery so it loses consciousness and draining all the blood as it's a carrier of disease. The only difference being, God's name is invoked in the latter. The Italians and Jews have no doubt been practicing it since who knows when, so why does it become such a big issue when you substitute the words macellare and kosher with halal?

No. Kosher meat has to be slaughtered by a Jew and halal meat by a Muslim, and each involves different blessings, although in some places meat slaughtered by a Jew or Christian can be considered halal as long as it's killed by the rules.

The first is not a big issue because most have never heard of it, and that is because (AFAIK) Italians have not demanded and got the same exemption in the UK. If they did I would be among the first to complain about it. I disagree with Kosher too but the spread of these practices does seem to be more about Halal, or at least that's what is being reported and not just in the Mail.

I hope Islam or Judaism don't start supporting bullfighting or foxhunting as then we won't be able to object to that either. It really is a most curious use of the word predudice when a practice cannot be challenged simply because of who is doing it.

It is all part of the inverted illogic that prevails, another popular favourite is calling it discrimination when a group (eg travellers and planning rules) are expected to conform to the same law as as everyone else.

Who is objecting to you challenging kosher or halal practices?
I don't have the feeling that halal is being shoved down my throat, so to speak, else I'd definitely challenge that too.
As an atheist I think all these traditional religious practices are simply silly, but we live in a country where freedom of belief is enshrined in law.
As for animal rights, as someone noted, you're not objecting to battery farming which arguably causes more distress over a longer period of time.
You ought to learn to distinguish between propaganda and reality - thats why most of us despise the Wail.
