To be fair I'm actually deciding whether the existing business is viable to sustain their lease and would it be worth running an off licence if they didn't renew.

So a simple P/L analysis based on your own figures that show that the venture is making a loss is not sufficient for you to make a decision?

As someone already said, specialist booze is probably well suited for online. People who are buying specialist stuff are probably going to know what they're talking about as well. It's worth pointing out that supermarkets don't jut sell cheap plonk, a small one might but a proper supermarket has a wine section probably 3X as big as a typical wine shop. My tesco has a whole aisle for wine and about half an aisle for bottled ales (on top of the full aisle for lager and cheap bitter), plus probably a better selection of single malts than a wine shop would.

I am actually a member of a wine club but am not convinced it's any cheaper or better than Tesco.

As an aside, I'm pretty flabberghasted anyone can spend £25k a year on booze. In fact even £100/week is a lot to me, especially if we're talking a few years ago when prices were a fair bit lower. Unless we're talking champagne and £20 cocktails at trendy IB-fashionable (i.e awful) places.
