The UK economy cake is now far too small to sustain a population of 65 million. That is the real issue.
As usual, SB, you avoid the hard questions as your sparrow-like brain has just enough horse-power to spout platitudes and sound-bites you've picked up from the daily Wail.
So can you answer the question/deal with the issue posed above?Hard Brexit now!

Complete rehaul of the Benefits system with all claimants being re-interviewed to establish credibility. Subsequently, those deemed fit for work will be required to either accept any suitable job (trust me, there are quite a number out there), or else turn up at a localised centre from where they will be assigned tasks like cleaning graffiti, litter, canals, Public Parks/spaces etc. All under the watchful eyes of some ex-military types, freshly hired following their stint in the Forces.Originally posted by sasguru View PostAs usual, SB, you avoid the hard questions as your sparrow-like brain has just enough horse-power to spout platitudes and sound-bites you've picked up from the daily Wail.

When those footing the bill see that those in receipt of their taxes are actually having to do something more socially beneficial than going to the bookies/local JDW/watching Jeremy Kyle, they will feel better about parting with their cash.

Better to just mince poor people up for animal feed. The only problem I had with Soylent Green was, why would minced up people be green?bloggoth

I'd take issue with that.Originally posted by sasguru View PostIts all very well saying people should go out and work, but frankly it sticks in my craw that that argument comes usually from the Tories, who when in power, destroyed manufacturing in the UK because they were too witless to find a away to both retain manufacturing and slap the unions down (which I admit needed doing).
When the Tories came to office in 1979, manufacturing as a percentage of the UK GDP was 26%. When the Tories left office in 1997 it was 22%. It had dropped 4% in 18 years, which I would not describe as destruction.
However, during the New Labour years between 1997 and 2009 it fell to just 12%, a drop of 10% in 12 years.
Note: The figures for those employed in manufacturing as a percentage of total UK workforce across those 30 years are similar to those as a proportion of GDP.Comment

Bibitty bobbity boo.Originally posted by shaunbhoy View PostNo sign of Tinkerbell today then, turning up to blather on in his Billy-Bragg-inspired, rose-tinted, idealistic ways about the evil Witch Thatcher (who is really to blame for all the poor people in this country!), and to castigate the taxpayers of this country for daring to question the morals of some of the slimy benefit-slurping cuckoos that sit amongst the truly needy in the land?
And all, no doubt, from the cushy safety of his tax-friendly haven in Singapore.
Hypocrites'r'us CSC

You do seem to have a reading comprehension problem SB. It's bad enough to misquote someone once in a thread, but to then come back on it and do it again just betrays how thick you actually are.
You're the essence of the typical hysterical daily mail readership. You bark loudly and regurgitate stereotypes and received wisdom without actually having put any real thought into it or come up with ideas of your own.
So, to recap. You started off with, this budget hitting them the hardest the solution being cut all benefits and the jobs will magically appear.feckless layabouts in the "poorest" households might then be persuaded to get off their lazy fat arses

Tax haven, no. But SB is a bit prone to getting wee details like facts wrong. No unemployment benefits to speak of. But hey, I didn't invent the system here.Originally posted by shaunbhoy View PostCould be. Maybe snaw will enlighten us.............if he can tear himself away from his Gin Sling long enough.
I don't think I'd want to live here if I was your average local, it's pretty much set up to be an employers paradise, and I don't they've even got as far as having maximum working hours or minimal holidays (I think you're supposed to get public holidays, though I'm not even sure about that), and god help you if you don't have a large extended family (That's basically the welfare state) and your main income earner has an accident at work, you'll be lucky to get treatment without showing a method of payment.
Ideal society, nah not by a very long stretch indeed.Hang on - there is actually a place called Cheddar?? - cailin maith

Congrats. Your most relevant contribution to the debate thus far.Originally posted by snaw View PostBibitty bobbity boo.
Now, on Planet snaw, do you seriously expect people to believe that all of the poor are just "unfortunate downtrodden helpless victims", or can you accept that with the barmy system we have had foisted upon us, largely by people with the same "Champagne Socialist" views that you seem to hold, is in fact promoting laziness in a significant proportion?
Of course, were you to be over here both witnessing things at first hand and paying for the privilege, rather than fussing over this from the balcony of Raffles' Hotel, you may hold a different view.
And one last thing, if you are going to accuse people of misquoting, at least have the sense not to blatantly do so yourself. That way you might avoid the accusations of "hypocrite", even if the ones of "imbecile" will still stick like glue.“The period of the disintegration of the European Union has begun.
