He's obviously only looking to have his ego stroked in these threads he posts rather than looking for serious comments, advice and/or assistance. Shame, really. There's a lot of collective experience he could tap into. -
No, but Woz wouldn't know that, would he?Originally posted by zeitghostdo they still have TV repair shops?
He'd just be beavering away in a garage imagining that all those ancient TVs he was fixing would find a loving home.
Poor Woz!

And what did you learn from it? What's your daily routine? What was your technical achievement of the last week? Feck all or less?Originally posted by sasguruAnd yes some of us were reading Knuth when your mother was wiping snot off your nose.
They are well established and there is a big percentage of people who will buy stuff only because its sold by a big company which is known.Originally posted by zeitghostThat's never bothered Microshaft.Comment

I learnt plenty from it which I applied when I was writing code in various languages for various companies over the course of my career.Originally posted by AtWAnd what did you learn from it? What's your daily routine? What was your technical achievement of the last week? Feck all or less?
.
My daily routine certainly does NOT consist of solving arcane technical questions that no one gives a tulipe about.
I have a responsibility to run a department that needs to show bottom line benefit to the business.
Ah fook it. You might grow up one day.Hard Brexit now!

No, no, zeitghost, listen to AtW. His product is so technically superior people will actively seek it out and use it just for the thrill of knowing they are at the cutting edge of search engine technology. He doesn't need to consider silly, waste of time things like marketing, unique selling points, the future potential or any of that guff.Originally posted by zeitghostThey weren't a big company when they bought the rights to DOS 1.0.Comment

1) Learned how to think through a problem and choose the best algorythm (or combination thereof) to apply to the work in hand. Also, taught me to be imaginative about the application of bits and bobs of pre-existing code to the work in hand. I learned to THINK about making code from reading Knuth.Originally posted by AtWAnd what did you learn from it? What's your daily routine? What was your technical achievement of the last week? 2) I get up about 9.40 - have breakfast with wife, walk dog. Settle down in front of computer, do email and tulip, correspond. About 2pm start coding. About 4pm may slack off and surf. 7pm Dinner, 8pm Go to pub.
3) Designed a db schema and some 'air code' interfaces for a small marketing project for 'Next PLC'. Also did a proposal and pitch for an online learning resource for an Oxford college.
What did you do again?

Ah, geekdom!
AtW, thanks for the feedback. I was running 100 tasks so...
I'll cut it down to 50 and see. Cheers.

I've build full text search engine that searches fast in almost 80 bln indexed words on one PC. Let me know when you design database schema for something meant to run something like this, until then just feck off and welcome to my ignore list.Originally posted by bogeymanWhat did you do again?Comment

Lucifer - your comments are not helpful. They don't advance me in any way and seem to be mainly designed to put me down by attacking from angle that has not received its due attention because its not top priority at the moment.
In my philosophy a good or ideally best product is pre-requisite to successful marketing.
Now stop for a second and consider that if search engine scales to 200 mln pages then it can provide guaranteed sub 0.1 second searches for most etailers that won't have more than 2 mln products. FYI searching is almost always done in inefficient manner since most programmers have no clue about it, so my enterprise search product is going to be fking fast because it was designed to be use with 100-1000 times more data than most clients have.Comment

Well thanks Pal!Originally posted by AtWI've build full text search engine that searches fast in almost 80 bln indexed words on one PC. Let me know when you design database schema for something meant to run something like this, until then just feck off and welcome to my ignore list.
If you could get over your paranoia for a moment, you could maybe deduce that I was being supportive of your efforts, but wanted to know how it would work as a commercial venture.
I don't just design DB schemas Alex, I work on DB internals, optimised bitmapped indexes and so on - so you can count and tag billions of records (matching a given set of criteria) in seconds (depending on hw of course, IBM z/x best).
But obviously Alex, you think you know it all and nobody else on this forum should dare to contradict your superhuman knowledge of the subject.
