A good thing? Or just a nice little earner for the Chancellor, and won't stop the lager louts getting hammered?

Price of alcohol to rise.
Speaking gibberish on internet talkboards since last Michaelmas. Plus here on Twitter -
Idiotic.
For years the demand for booze has been inelastic and so they have repeatedly hammered it. However, those days have passed and the taxes cause diminishing returns.
It wont stop youngsters binge drinking and causing problems as the most problems are associated with bars that are 'trendy' and charge a premium price.
It could be argued that the high prices have caused the problem. The high prices have destroyed the generalist pub where all ages would be customers. The more mature ones would keep the youngsters under control, but the specialisation into old / young pubs means that the regulation is not there and the youngsters go wild.
In any case, I'm limited on my booze intake on medical ground so it would not make too much difference to me.How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

The price hike isn't going to include pubs, just supermarkets and offies apparently"I can put any old tat in my sig, put quotes around it and attribute to someone of whom I've heard, to make it sound true."

Having lived in a Nordic country with high alcohol pricing it's just going to be a nice little earner for the Chancellor.
Until this country's (as a whole) drinking culture changes then regardless of the price of alcohol people will drink a lot.
I use to drink at 16 in pubs and I didn't get drunk because I didn't want my age discovered. Funny thing is that I looked young for my age as I would be paying child fare on the tube and train and the ticket inspectors never questioned me.
However with the increase in fining pubs where under age-drinkers are found this isn't an option any more. So it's been common for a good few years to have teenagers terrorising local off-licenses and cornershops to get alcohol and drink on street corners. And the teenagers who do this aren't just the poorer ones."You’re just a bad memory who doesn’t know when to go away" JRComment

As long as they do the minimum price per unit system I couldn't care less, I buy premium ale and wine which is already way more expensive per unit than cheap lager.Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave JohnsonComment

I pay €0.85 per 1/2 litre of Bavaria's finest. Thankfully the Germans don't see alcoholism as part of their national identity so my happiness is set to continue. While you're waiting, read the free novel we sent you. It's a Spanish story about a guy named 'Manual.'Comment
