Isn't it about time South Africa got itself a more African name? 'South Africa' is the country name equivalent of calling your second born 'Child Two'. South West Africa became Namibia, Rhodesia became Zimbabwe, Northern Rhodesia Zambia etc. Wonder why South Africa hasn't done the same.

I guess they haven't chosen an 'African' name to avoid the tribal politicking that plagued so many of the other countries. SA has 13 different languages and it is comprised of many ethnic groups (African and other).+50 Xeno Geek Points

The nine provinces of SA are roughly based on the historical territories of the original tribal inhabitants of those areas. There is probably as much chance of getting them all to agree on name with significance to african nationals as you have of getting all the member of the EU to agree on calling Europe something other than Europe. It's a nice, safe, geographic description that every one can more or less agree on."Being nice costs nothing and sometimes gets you extra bacon" - Pondlife.Comment

Azania
Well is you want a more African name Azania seems to have been the one of choice as it was proposed in the 50s as the new name for South Africa by Kwame Nkrumah
During the demise of apartheid, we also had APLA (Azanian peoples liberation army), who would have been happy to debate with you regarding the name of SA, if they didnt feel like burning you to death with a tyre and petrol.
When China had relations with RSA during apartheid they referred to RSA as Azania IIRCThere are no evil thoughts except one: the refusal to thinkComment
