It screwed up flights then too. For more than a thousand years there was not one vapour trail to be seen anywhere on Earth.

    Only the and were flying.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

      Yep - FALSE alarm

"Live footage from the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service initially appeared to show images from the Hekla volcano with a huge plume of smoke rising from it. Later, the service said the camera was accidentally pointed at the Eyjafjallajökull glacier - which continues to erupt and has caused major air travel disruptions across Europe."

Katla is more likely to erupt now than Hekla, as it's been restless recently and it's right nextdoor to Eyawotsitjoker.

Katla also has a history of erupting at the same time as or shortly after Eyathingummywotsiter

Indeed. Wikipedia say geologists are 'concerned' that it might erupt. That's bollocks. They're rubbing their hands with glee. At last something exciting on the news!

They had a vulcanologist chap on PM the other night. John Humphries was doing his best to get the guy to admit that he was really excited by it all but he didnt bite and just said stuff about it being scientifically intersting and a real shame for all those people who were stranded etc

Well, I'm doing geology on the OU (slowly) and I'd already decided that I'm going on to do vulcanology, and I will happily admit that I think it's weally weally bwilliant and the most exciting thing that's happened in the northern hemisphere since Mount Saint Helens went BANG.

I only hope that broadcasters and scientists will take the opportunity to teach the public something about the earth sciences and convey something of the wonders of this planet.

Oddly enough that ( Geology ) is what I originally intended to study at Uni, with the intention of getting into Vulcanology When I got there I found it so mind numbingly boring I switched to IT after the first semester.

If you are interested in volcanoes what's special about this one? There are many places with active volcanoes around the world, on hotspots or diverging plate boundaries.
Is the Icelandic one special in any way? Close proximity to the ocean, other factors?
