    Simples.
Please re-read this thread and substitute the term "a friend I know" in place of any reference to the PM.

    Simples.

Read the contract. The contract I have with my hosting ISP is quite specific about who is responsible for backups. What that means is that if I lose data and ask them to restore it, it's chargeable; if they lose data then its their responsibility, though they cannot guarantee to restore bang up to date copies. I keep my own backups.

There's also the problem of web hosting companies getting taken over, and service levels plummeting. Basic risk management says you should be prepared to switch suppliers at the drop of a hat.

And that of course means having your own backups.

Customer churn is a built in feature of many telco and ISP models. They except a certain amount of churn and as long as it's less than their planned limit, they do not care.

              Ta.

There's also the point that if the ISP ever has to do a full restore, I would expect them to give the larger customers priority.

Cheap hosting rarely includes backup, although in theory many places would be able to find a copy if they tried hard enough. When I looked into hosting, decent backup cost more than the hosting itself.
