The real measure of your level of fitness is not what you need to do to get knackered but how long it takes for you to recover. But then again Mich, you knew this.

Good. The cut finger is a blessing in disguise. If you get into ‘overreaching’ you’ll find yourself getting moody, losing your appetite, losing your libido, being susceptible for viruses and gastro-intestinal problems and you’ll be forced to take a couple of weeks rest. It’s one small step further to chronic overtraining and then you could be off work on and off for months with a series of nasty illnesses. Happened to me when I was 25; creeps up on you then hits you like a train. So when you can do weights again, swap one or two of the sessions you do now for the body pump.

I'll bet that as a result of taking a bit more rest, you're now going to progress faster.

To be honest, I prefer a game of tennis or going out on my bike. I'm not playing team sports anymore so training for the sake of it doesn't interest me.

On the rare occasions I use the gym, I have a programmable key.

Yep, but that's also age related. However, a fit older person will probably recover faster than an unfit young person.

Nice one. Do you live at altitude?

As an aside, did anyone see The Gadget Show last night? It's one of these programmes that I find you have to record and play back, because it's so full of dross. Anyway during the programme they were demonstrating and saying how great this certain machine was, forget the name, where you part and close your legs on a machine while standing upright, then during the "advert break", the same machine was advertised.

I cycle into work and back - around an hour a day. Around this time of year I also cycle for 45 mins lunchtime. This morning I cycled 13 miles as I had to drive into London first to do some stuff. Another 13 miles back to the truck tonight. I'm 47 years old so not exactly a nipper.

Methinks such a machine is good for the ladies for tightening certain deep muscles above the inner thighs.
