Britain is living off the wealth creating legacy of Thatcherism. It is booming in comparison to many third world countries, but we still have enormous social problems that you and your cronies are quite happy to ignore.Let us not forget EU open doors immigration benefits IT contractors more than anyone -
Point 1: Hindsight is a wonderful thing, maybe the govt was trying to avoid antagonising the Argies too much and thereby hopefully avoid a war.Originally posted by JabberwockyGetting old Mordac, your memory is going. All the clues about an imminent Argie invasion were there - the Foreign secretary chose to tell the world that no British nuke sub was in the area - Argies invaded - Carrington resigned, and 100s of British soldiers lost their lives. Some triumph for conservatism.
Despite TBs mistakes in Europe nothing quite compares to having your economy manipulated by Soros and the humiliating exit from the ERM. Norman Lament indeed.
I don't think you could accuse Mrs T of rushing into a war in the same way Bliar has done in Iraq.
Point 2: "Humiliating" as this was, it probably saved us from the Euro (I seem to remember all the socialists crying out for ERM membership long before Major went in, where are they now?) and an awful lot more pain. His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...Comment

>Britain isn't in decline. Britain is booming despite the leadership of TB and a labor government
Actually, Britain isn't even booming. Growth is nearly static, and I bet you 10p Gordo has to "revise" his economic forecasts yet again this year.
If it wasn't for the rise in house prices and the credit-fuelled retail mini-boom, we would actually have spent most of the last 4 years in recession. His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...Comment

Benno and Jabberwocky are typical of the anti tory brigade. While it is very easy to moan about the state the UK was in in the 80's and Thatcher in general, they cannot give any examples as to how our basket case economy could have been turned around without the mass unemployment and hardship which many faced.

Labour were fully paid up supporters of the ERM. To stay in the ERM the government HAD to play by the rules. That is, they HAD to prop up the pound. Had Labour been in power, to stay in the ERM, they too would have HAD to prop up the pound.Last edited by BoredBloke; 5 January 2006, 11:32.Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.

To be impartial.. The problem wasn't being in the ERM but the stupid level they entered at it was very poorly managed whoever was to blame.Originally posted by TonyEnglishLabour were fully paid up supporters of the ERM. Had Labour been in power, to stay in the ERM, they too would have HAD to prop up the pound. The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.
But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”Comment

I'm not anti tory - Anti thatcher yes, not anti tory.Originally posted by TonyEnglishBenno and Jabberwocky are typical of the anti tory brigade. I also have no sympathy for a bunch of moaning tw'ts who sit around forecasting economic meltdown for the best part of the last five years which STILL hasn't happened. The same moaning tw'ts who are doing very nicely thank you very much and if they don't like it here can f'ck of somewhere else.
The fact that you lot are included in this group of people is your fault, not mine.
And this time it IS goodbye. I'm off to spend some money on my credit card.Comment

From the observer
Germans raise ghost of ERM in euro-entry row

............
As far as Gordon Brown is concerned, this is a red rag to a bull. When Shadow Chancellor in 1992, Brown was fully supportive of ERM membership, yet it was John Major's Conservative government that received all the opprobrium for the disaster of Black Wednesday, when it lost billions trying to maintain the value of sterling. After that Brown turned vehemently against the ERM. He has continually dismissed suggestions from Brussels that Britain should rejoin, and has argued that this would be unnecessary.

Maybe it wasn't all bad

Off again and still has not given one example how to turn around the 1979 economy without the mass unemployment.Rule Number 1 - Assuming that you have a valid contract in place always try to get your poo onto your timesheet, provided that the timesheet is valid for your current contract and covers the period of time that you are billing for.
