…on my pizza at lunchtime. Now my arse is supplying enough gas to heat the central Amsterdam area. I haven't often eaten artichokes but I enjoyed them. Are artichokes well known for this effect?

It's a green vegetable, so, yes it is to be expected."See, you think I give a tulip. Wrong. In fact, while you talk, I'm thinking; How can I give less of a tulip? That's why I look interested." -
Mich you swine !
You just made me remember the deep fried artichokes I had a few weeks ago in Matricianella, Piazza San Lorenzo, Rome. Food from heaven.
The Roast Lamb and Oxtail rigatoni wre also divine.
I'm so hungry now !!!!
BTW they didn't give wind. But I discovered nothing else but depraved, excessive superstition. Pliny the youngerComment

I don't think they give me terrible wind, but definitely some."See, you think I give a tulip. Wrong. In fact, while you talk, I'm thinking; How can I give less of a tulip? That's why I look interested."Comment

The inulin is not well digested by some people, leading in some cases to flatulence and gastric pain. Gerard's Herbal, printed in 1621, quotes the English planter John Goodyer on Jerusalem artichokes:
"which way soever they be dressed and eaten, they stir and cause a filthy loathsome stinking wind within the body, thereby causing the belly to be pained and tormented, and are a meat more fit for swine than men."
