The inulin is not well digested by some people, leading in some cases to flatulence and gastric pain. Gerard's Herbal, printed in 1621, quotes the English planter John Goodyer on Jerusalem artichokes:

"which way soever they be dressed and eaten, they stir and cause a filthy loathsome stinking wind within the body, thereby causing the belly to be pained and tormented, and are a meat more fit for swine than men."

I've never had this effect, nor has anyone else in the family.

    Perhaps you are just special?

I don't think they give me terrible wind, but definitely some.

    Mich you swine !

You just made me remember the deep fried artichokes I had a few weeks ago in Matricianella, Piazza San Lorenzo, Rome. Food from heaven.

The Roast Lamb and Oxtail rigatoni wre also divine.

    I'm so hungry now !!!!

    BTW they didn't give wind.

    started a topic Artichokes

    Artichokes

…on my pizza at lunchtime. Now my arse is supplying enough gas to heat the central Amsterdam area. I haven't often eaten artichokes but I enjoyed them. Are artichokes well known for this effect?
