So? I wanted the book there and then and wasn't bothered about reading it onscreen, so rather than waiting for a paper copy to turn up from Amazon I got the ebook.

One is after all a contractor; trivial sums like that are hardly of any consequence

The last time I bought an ebook from a publisher's web site it was $12 cheaper than the physical counterpart ($27.99 as against $39.99).

The problem is that there are discount outlets for the physical stuff meaning it's possible to find physical stuff cheaper than the digital equivalent. Doesn't matter if it's not comparing apples with apples by shopping at the same place, the possibility of finding a new physical book or cd cheaper than you can download it means they're still charging too much for the digital version.

Downloads need to be half retail before I'll use them, though I can see the appeal of movies in place of renting.

Renting at least allows one to take a "backup copy" before returning it
