My time is too valuable. I had thought it was a serious conversation
Yes, that is what churchill (the poster) said when I quized him on his "certification". You cannot pratice as a doctor without a degree, you cannot pratice law without a degree but thanks these certification bodies you can pratice the science of Engineering without a degree.

OK, I'll bite, "engineer" is not a protected profession in the UK, however, the title Chartered Engineer is protected in law. Yes, old school guys like me practise without a degree, just a HNC plus extra subjects at HNC level plus >35 years experience across the world. Today, it is almost impossible (possible, but extremely difficult) to qualify as CEng without a degree (MEng is preferred). You may also be an accountant and many other things without a degree. I can't really understyand your point to be frank. A degree on it's own doesn't make you a professional in any line of work.

You have been told you are a chartered engineer by a completely unregulated body, let me ask you this, if I set up a Doctors certification body and acknowledged the first tramp on the street I meet as a doctor would you let him practice medicine on your child? No, you would expect him to have completed 5 years of formal education, it should be the same as Germany where you have to get a degree to call yourself an engineer. This tripe people come out with in this country about certification. Snake oil engineers.

Are you suggesting that the degree that my nephew attained last year in Alternative Therapies from the University of Derby does not make him a professional?
I will have you know that he walked straight into a job at a nursing home helping old people with bad feet.

Fred thinks he should be allowed to call himself a doctor in 5 years.
Yes. You simply rebuild the bridge from scratch every time you need a change.
The difference between (real world) engineering and (agile) software development is that you can rebuild your product many many times for free. Even many millions of times. Building a bridge you only have one shot.
for free?
