Anyone sending their kids to one? Where? How soon do you have to book a place - I've heard several years in advance?

There's a difference between private and public school, any kid can go private (funds permitting), they have to earn a place for public school.
At least thats how I understand it... but what would a compo educated oik like me know?Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave JohnsonComment

I never knew that, always confused me how paid schools could be public or private but schools for the general public are called comprehensive.Originally posted by gingerjedi View PostThere's a difference between private and public school, any kid can go private (funds permitting), they have to earn a place for public school.

Yes, those kids that want to go to one do, and those that don't don't.Originally posted by sasguru View PostAnyone sending their kids to one? Where? How soon do you have to book a place - I've heard several years in advance?
Booking a place depends, in Denmark it is a year for a 'proper' boarding school (Although in Denmark there are a variety of 'boarding' schools ages 14-16 many of which you can turn up with your bags on the first day of term, but I'm referring to an English style boarding school.)
The school I went to in England preferred you booked them in previous to 5 years old. But lower tier ones I think it's pretty much the same: turn up on first day of term with bags.
Switzerland only say a long time if they don't want the little darling.
Insanity: repeating the same actions, but expecting different results.

Local state primary for now - Missus M and I will be facing this dilemma in about 5 yrs, although the local comp is well regarded.Originally posted by sasguru View PostAnyone sending their kids to one? Where? How soon do you have to book a place - I've heard several years in advance?
Currently calculate it will cost me circa £180k to put 3 x offspring through the nearest private for 5 years each.

We may not bother and instead use that cash to support them through university / early career instead. And I want to retire at 55.Comment

It's ok mate, don't have any regrets - you would not have done any better even if you were at Eton...Comment
