I went to an appalling state comprehensive school, one at the bottom of every league table ever and then went on the worst university in the UK, again bottom of every league table every year.

Elite schools are often ranked by how many Oxbridge places they get.
Public school near me consistently sends 1/3 to Oxford or Cambridge. It is very difficult to get into, and the fees are 22K per annum. To stand a chance of getting a place you really need to go to the prep school which is about 18K a year. This is also very difficult to get into, so you really need to have private tutoring from two years old to ensure a place.
Total cost is at least £0.25 million, and for this you only get a 1/3 chance of Oxbridge.
