I threw my VAT return into a post box without a stamp. I'd forgotten you need one these days.

That is exactly what I did with my first frank-less envelope! I'm glad it's not just me.
They cashed my cheque anyway. The VAT-man must have seen sense and, if there was a 40p postal charge, paid it to get at the juicy several-grand cheque inside. So just phone up if it gets to a few days before your deadline and they haven't cashed it.
