If a plane breaks up at 45,000 ft then you'll only be conscious for a few seconds anyway due to low partial pressure of oxygen at that altitude - assuming hitting the wall of freezing cold air at 500 mph doesn't rip your head off first.

I thought only Concorde went that high, and most other stuff was 28,000 to 35,000.

Not that it would make a whole lot of difference.

I have heard of some attempts by those (I will not call them Christians) on the right wing to push the view that the correct translation is "Thou shalt not murder", thereby justifying war. They are deluded. In my opinion killing, in any form, is wrong and can never be justified in the eyes of God.

Even worse is a low-level incident - then you might survive the initial impact. There you are, your body broken and twisted, your innards your outaards, with bile on your lips and blood on your hands, when suddenly your nose comes to life. You smell the kerosene before it ignites, and watch as your face gradually melts into the floor. Probably the screams wouldn't be heard above the still spinning engine. And even then you might survive the burning. Think of it ... in the hospital bed, the searing agony of shedding skin and puss and excrement and certain death. Mmmm ....

Still, it might not happen.

That's a plane's normal cruising or service altitude - a B767 can top 43,000ft for example. However, payload, fuel, wind factors etc will determine actual flight level which will be lower around 35,000ft or so.

Totally off the topic, but when researching my Hitler story found some interesting things on Ydrasil and other white supremacist websites. As one might expect, they liked to expose Martin Luther King as a drunk and womaniser. On the other hand when it suited them they were quite happy to quote him as an unimpeachable authority. His remark for example that when he heard someone behind him in the street he was always relieved if they were white.
