I've heard that, all other things being equal, the advantage is the square of the difference in numbers. So 2 people fighting 1 person don't have double the advantage, but 4 times.

It's not that simple, a good fighter would make the 2 people get in each others way and neutralise their advantage.

Ah, I see. It's purely concerned with the number of people enagaging in a firefight. It's not concerned with tactics which would affect that number or any other tactical considerations which might change the outcome.

It makes sense though, both sides will be losing people but it will affect the smaller side proportionately more.

Which is possibly why enemies try to outflank each other, or divide and conquer. Easier to fight (all things being equal again) two half sized armies twice than a big one once. In (over simplified) theory.

If there were 4 people in my army and 4 people in some else's army, I would sure prefer it to be 4 against 2 twice than 4 against 4 once (or better still 4 against 1, 4 times).

They wre interviewing Haye on R4 this morning. Came over as an intelligent and articulate bloke.

Talking about his hand. He said he thinks he's broken it and did it in the second round. He'd done it once before, a few years ago, when he hit his opponent on the head with a badly aimed punch. Skulls being somewhat resilient when hit, his hand came off worse. Apparently this time he did it punching the other guys jaw!

It may not have been an entertaining fight to watch but Haye did exactly what he needed to do. Nothing flashy, no showboating, just work hard and out box the other guy.
