Yep, you are only allowed to scrap fully serviceable working cars with an MOT, and replace them with a new car that has used tonnes of energy in it's manufacture and transportation.

    How green is New Labour?

I suppose I could collect and use it illegally a few times while I look for a new car, and reassess whether to have it repaired and MOT'd when more info is in, depending on what I find. I might check out the auctions, where I'd bought it initially (it was an ex company car and had been well looked after).

I've taken failed cars to a different MOT stn in the past and gotten a completely different report, saving hundreds of pounds.

Three anti roll bars? That's clever - it only has two. (It'll be three anti-roll bar droplinks I'd bet).

My 12 year old Primera isn't well either. The exhaust is blowing, and the exhaust place says it really needs a whole new system - £450. Plus I have a slow leak on one tyre which they say is because of corrosion on the wheel, so really needs a replacement wheel too.

MOT is until June, so I think I'll keep using it until the noise gets too bad and then scrap it. Sad, because it's still extremely reliable and good to drive. But I could probably buy another one in better condition for <£1000.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

Sounds like a lot of money or anti-roll bars but I think shockers are not that cheap these days.

Phone around other garages. Take it somewhere else for a second opinion in case you are being scammed.

There is a website for getting car parts at good prices, can't remember if its carpartsdirect or something similar. Then phone the garages for a labour quote.

            Good Luck

Yes, they said something about links, and that I'd need 4.

Bad idea. If you do get pulled for any reason, or have an accident, having no MOT invalidates your insurance so they will do you for that as well. The courts take a very dim view of uninsured drivers, especially since you did it knowingly. But it's your call.

                  Point of order chaps...

Unless the OP has the world's first six-wheeled Mondeo, how can it need three anti-roll bars. There's only one per axle.

The only accident I've had in my driving career is someone going into the back of me, but yes I could get unlucky. I suppose these days you can get quite a lot of car for £500 and the car can't last forever. Its been damn reliable and economical though. I also get a bit sentimental about my cars.

We've already covered that. 3 anti rollbar <something, probably drop, I don't recall>links, rather than bars. I have no idea what they are and 4 would be replaced.
