I want something like the 'electronic clipboards' the engineers carry around in star-trek. Look like a laptop-size iphone.

I wonder if laptops without keyboards will ever take off... touch-screen for mouse and typing alike.

I'm still waiting for a hand-writing recognition system that works.

        It's a big ask, I know.

Is it just around the corner?

As an early adopter of the Apple Newton, I would have to say 'no' !

Have tried Palm and other 'hand writing' interfaces since, and they all suck donkey balls.

'Typing' by tapping on a screen with a stylus is just frustrating and infantile.

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

I recall being pleasantly suprised by how well this worked on my HP iPAQ h4150 some years ago. The recognition was pretty quick and accurate, and improved with time as you "trained" it. Although my handwriting will still pretty legible at that time.
Where are we going? And what’s with this hand basket?

              Kindle is:

              (1)proprietary
              (2)AFAIK only in the US

Amazon (kindles) owner have bought STANZA which the e-reader software for the Itouch, which supports the epub format.
So looks like, the standard document format is going to be e-pub.
