    Start looking for something new.

    Once you have it, walk.

I have a notice period to honour (a month).
Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.

You may have to honour it, but you dont have to work it. Funny how quickly a bad back can play up.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

The now follows 15 posts on how unethical this would be, and how contractors that do this kind of thing give the other contractors a bad name.

I would normally be one of those posters. I believe in honouring contracts, but you already said they will replace you ASAP rather than at the end of the contract you are currently working.
Under those circumstances I would have no qualms. They have effectively already given you notice, it is just a matter of how long that period is.

Get absolutely rat-faced in the pub at lunchtime. Keep that up for as long as it takes. You'll probably be out of there in under 3 days.

Better idea: take a four pack of lager in to work with you. From 9 a.m., be drinking lager at your desk. When anyone says anything, just say "It's the only way I can cope with this place. I've already been told I'm going to be sacked."

Then Alt-Tab back to Contractor UK / Jobserve / Solitaire so it looks as though that's all you do all day.

I agree, I think it's about time I started putting my company first. What I was thinking was it would be better to give them a months notice first, then we know where we all stand.

Got to agree, from the minute they told you they were replacing you they effectively "gave you notice", even if they don't realise it, just with no end date defined.

30 days after that (if it was 30 days each way on notice) neither side has an obligation to the other.

Sure it's playing with schematics, but then that's what law and contracts are all about, plus we all know what's how they would/will play it themselves if they have a reason to do so.
