that was a free bit of info, dont forget me when you strike it rich.
That's a good point, I did some work for a local authority and they had a huge photographic section with photos, slides and negatives collected since the dawn of photography, odds are quite a few have the same.

The market has good potential, if you get the business running well and word of mouth marketing takes off you could have a nice lucrative business (I hope). Word of mouth will be your best selling strategy especially with enthusiasts like photographers.

I assume that you've already contacted the various photo clubs around the country and the likes of the YHA, sports societies and clubs which maintain large photo collections? The British Library have their own facilities for this kind of stuff, but many smaller libraries (Universities have large libraries and sometimes photo clubs) don't.

I'm not a photographer at all, but there are absolutely loads across the UK, your market could be great if you get it spot on.

If you can hit up the libraries etc (as suggested above) then you are made matey, you wont need any more suggestions. Do the decent thing by whoever suggested it.
Make sure you have the staff and equipment if you start marketting to that lot though, you could end up swamped.
I am not qualified to give the above advice!

              here's an idea.

Take someones image, lets say a guy.
page 1 - image of guy with a bit of biography.
page 2 - photo of a guy in the falklands with guys image superimposed with a bit of made up biography - this was your dad
page 3 - same again for WWII - grandad

              etc
              .........

page 60 - English civil war this is what you would have looked like as a cavalier - bit of made up biography

page 120 - This is you fighting next to Boudicca

page 122 - you with Jesus, blah de blah

              etc
              ........

page 300 - wow, you are a bit hairy in this one, set in the Caucasus - where you originated

If you could tie it into a family tree, so much the better

Women would go for it, just to see what they would have looked like in the different clothes

                stay away from doctoring images.

hope you've got good disclaimers & insurance.

as previously mentioned word of mouth will be the key driver.

Website looks nice but could do with more images that are representative of peoples holiday snaps perhaps. Format is a bit narrow.

Having done a fair bit of neg/slide scanning myself, it's hugely labour intensive. Removing all the dust and crap from old film stock is a nightmare and people will likely complain if they see their images with lots of dust specks.

Will you be doing this personally or getting someone else to do it?

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.
