Actually Chavs didn't exist in the 80s. Thatcher created them when she destroyed manufacturing and created an underclass of people who would normally have been employed in factories.

Nail on head. A chav will demand respect, without ever earning it (or intending to earn it). They're aware they are most definitely not respected, so that's why it's a sore point with them. Apart from that, hoodies and/or baseball caps are a big giveaway.
