Strange I would have thought it would have the same engine as my Beemer, a straight 6 3.0 with twin turbos and pushing 360bhp and its not even an M!

It's about 7 years old and doesn't have turbos.

The twin turbo engine in the 335 is much newer and appears to be a cracking engine. Hence why they needed to go to a 4.0 V8 in the very latest M3 to beat that power without turbos.

I want a sports car to be fast, have surging acceleration and to sound fantastic. The MX5 is none of these things. A modern 2.0 diesel Astra would rape it. Looks nice in pink though sasguru.

The MX5 is well-known as being a great, fun car. You don't need a big engine for fun, you need good handling.

I got a MX5 in 1993. They offered an official BBR phase I turbo. There were also phase II and phase III turbos. I had the first ever phase III turbos (eventually 4 were done). Alas it went off the road (icy conditions) 10 days before my first wedding. I got married with 2 black eyes.

Dim, does the Z3 body flex much, only driven a 2.8 and that was a bit ropey when the road got bumpy. Can't beat a BMW 6 though, great engines even the non-M ones. Only been a passenger in a Z3 M and it was ballistic.

But for 10k it has to be a 350Z coupe or a Boxster S.

Nothing wrong with MX5s but a £10k MX5's biggest problem is you can get something a few years older that is much faster.

How does the chassis of the E36/7 M roadster differ from that of the standard Z3 roadster?
Like all Z3s, the M roadster’s suspension is made up of MacPherson struts in the front and semi-trailing arms in the rear. However, compared to the six-cylinder Z3 roadster, the M roadster has the following modifications:
-Wider front and rear tracks (by 0.4-inches)
-Reduced ride height (by 1.1-inches)
-Modified front suspension geometry
-Firmer springs and shocks
-Thicker anti-roll bars
-Stronger semi-trailing arms
-Reinforced subframe

How does the chassis of the S54-powered E36/7 M roadster differ from that of the earlier versions?

When the M roadster switched to the S54 engine (2/01 production), the chassis was upgraded to the even stiffer springs and shocks developed for the M coupe.


The S54 engined version is pretty rare. Only 79 RHD were made worldwide in total.

Obviously it will always flex a bit more than a hardtop car, but it's pretty sorted considering it doesn't have a state-of-the-art suspension by modern standards.

It does 0-100 in about 11 seconds, which isn't bad for an old car.

Hmmmm... reminds me of my MGF; first time I drove that in the wet I went down the road spinning like a top and wound up putting it through a hedge.

Worn tyres, mid mounted engine, wet, greasy road and crap driver - a recipe for a disaster.

Used to scare the tulip out of me sometimes - normally coming up to a sharp bend when I would apply the brakes & steer into the corner but the car would carry straight on. Lucky there was never anything coming the other way.
