Well, that's fair. You shouldn't expect it handed to you on a plate.

A guy I used to work with is so proud of his PhD in Acient Latin and French (which is important when you work for a database company) that he actually has his first name in LinkedIn as "Dr <Name>"

I'm tempted to buy one just so that I can put it in my profile to nark him. Maybe when I get a new contract, I might consider such stupid extravagances....

That is naffness of the highest order. You use Dr if you are authoring an a paper or lecturing at a uni.

Agreed. The use of Doctor out of context is very much like the types who used to carry their military titles into civilian life.

Before my last UK punter closed and moved the operation back to the US, there used to be a pal of Bob S in their offices that insisted on being called Dr .... and would call other people Mr just to labour the point. Everyone hated him.

Once the guy that hired him had officially handed over and left the office, 'Dr.' X was called into the new managers office as security cleared his desk. I was requested to have an onsite meeting just so I could see it happen and then we had an early lunch at a very nice place in Mayfair on the new bosses expenses.

The new boss was telling the story that Dr X really thought that he was about to get a promotion and had trouble understanding that he was getting fired.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Indeed. Like my colleague here who, having been in the Indian navy, insisted on his email incorporating "Cdr *.****** ****(Retd)". He gave me a delivery plan in Excel but omitted the fact that all the dates needed 30 days subtracting from them. Until after I'd loaded the data.

You need to sort this out or get new dressing gown for Xmas.

It always used to be considered OK for people to retain military titles if they became school teachers. (I don't mean expect to be addressed by them all the time, instead of "sir" or "miss", but include them on staff lists and the school prospectus and suchlike.)

edit: I still think the classic is the Indian guy (possibly fictional?) who always used the title "BA (Calcutta) (failed)"
