I want to know who works for them. so how are their telephone extensions structured. How do they disguise their structure and how do they "protect" their employees from being poached.

I think he said he worked at Yahoo, not sure though.

I got a phone call last year from a Google HR person. A friend of mine works for them and recommended me. We chatted a for a while about what I did and then she explained the interview and selection process. It sounded so drawn out and unpleasant that I finished by saying I wasn't really interested. She was a bit shocked; I don't think they're used to people who aren't prepared to jump through hoops to join them. I know they're supposed to be a fun company to work for but going through all that crap for less money than a contractor makes just seemed pointless to me.

They protect their employees from being poached by looking after them very well, not financially but in terms of making their life easier - free food, games rooms, free transport, flexible working conditions etc. They tend to go for nerdy graduates so they make it easy for people who are used to student life to carry on in a similar fashion. That also makes it hard for them to leave because they'll need to start doing a lot of things for themselves.

On the other hand I believe Microsoft have managed to poach some people over the last couple of years.

I saw one of their adverts last year which had an age range up to 60. Might have been for the admin side of course.

Sorry - the person in question is only a distant acquaintance...it would be asking too much to get that kind of information.

He sat there quietly for 20 minutes waiting to be called. The someone came in and said "Thank you, you can go, you failed."

You are supposed to "show curiosity" by playing with the toys, apparently.

                Damn right too

It's unnatural not to play with Lego!

I started the interview process a couple of years back when my 1st contract was coming to and end. After 16 (yes sixteen) interviews over one phone call, and two site visits, I was asked to visit for a 3rd time for a further 5 interviews.

I said "If you don't know I'm good enough now, then I'm not prepared to continue."

Eventually they made me an offer where I could come and work for them on probation with a 1 day notice period. I asked about the salary, and they said they weren't prepared to discuss that until I'd signed off the notice period.

                  I declined.

Been contacted again by then 3 or 4 times since, but I mention the process and say you need to let me know what salary it would be before I even talk to you, and they aren't prepared to discuss it further.

I'd be surprised if it was a poor salary after all the hassle they go through interviewing you, if you were to jack it in the next day.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
