I move around for each contract. Our friends and families find that surreal; citing schools, friendship, family bond and career-related reasons why they couldn't possibly move any further than to a different part of the same town. It seems that, on the whole, most people find relocating quite hard.

Here we have people who have left their family, friends, schools, roots, knowledge of local laws and customs, real ale, and all those familiar things.

They were, effectively, invited to NZ to work because NZ wanted them. They were told: come here, work hard and in a couple of years, this will be your new home and we will welcome you as one of us.

So these people - who wanted to go, admittedly - broke their bonds and went. They found work, made the move, and started their new lives.

Then NZ let them down by failing to provide the work.

    Then NZ said "clear off".

NZ could at least have given them 1,000 NZD per head and their air fare home.

They weren't there on temporary work permits. They were there as invited and vetted and welcome settlers.

To invite people to your home to be part of your family, then go to bed and leave them to find the door, without at least the bus fare to a hotel, is rather rude.
Alfs point about the special bond is a good one. I wouldn't be suprised to get done over by some countries, but would expect more from NZ.
I wonder how this will reflect on their reputation and standing in the future

I was at the New Zealand emigration / recruitment fair in London a few months ago - in October I think. Plenty of job prospects being offered then and lots of visa agents plying their services - I still get spam from them, but now I can reply to them with a link to this forum

They were on temporary work visas.

These were presented by some people (including those that are kicking up this fuss) as an "easier" way to get into the country than being granted a residence visa from day 1. Go to New Zealand "on holiday", get a job, then apply for a WTR visa.

When there were a lot of unfilled jobs going at all levels this approach worked OK but it has now come unstuck.

It is really bad luck for those affected, but I can't blame the NZ government for that.*

*declaration of interest - I am one of the residents whose interests are being "protected" by kicking out the foreigners. There is nothing to protect though - there are no jobs here for anyone.

Oh FFS... Thousands of moaning expats returning to the UK, that’s all we need.

You are never suggesting that the Kiwis are failing to deliver on promise?

              I preferred version 1!

No. Because the UK is part of the EU. On the plus side, you can move out of the Uk as freely as continental Europeans can move in.

What is the end game? Why does the EU allow so many migrants from outside the EU when our quality of life is clearly going down the pan?

http://www.optimumpopulation.org/ interesting stuff, the UK should have an optimum population of 30m instead of a projected 77m by 2050.

I'm starting to think the USA is preferable to Europe.
