PS. I was wondering why I had a feeling of deja vu and I remembered the last time this argument (Muslims taking over Europe) turned up on CUK it was with an avowed racist. Forgotten his name but he got banned, remember.
Which makes me mighty suspicious of Monsieur Le SpitRoast's point in posting here - the only difference is he's somewhat more "polite" and "reasonable".
In both cases the posters had jobs that indicated they should be more intelligent than the guff they were posting. Hmmm.

"Ijtihad" is the term (part) of sharia that describes the process of making a legal decision by independent interpretation of the legal sources (Quran and Sunnah - sayings of the prophet). So when we talk about sharia, there is no such thing as a "rule book" with set laws. Learned muslims (i.e. those that have studied and understand the sources in depth) are responsible for interpreting the sources to define the laws. The problem is that since the 10th century the process of "Ijtihad" has not really been happening.

If the sources were to be studied today and a new set of laws/rulings produced, they may be very different. The danger is that one view of sharia is being propagated by the hardliners, Taliban type people. But if you were to ask muslims in the west if they want to live under those rules - 99% will say no. In fact, even muslims in Pakistan don't want to live under the sharia the Taliban wants to bring in. I was there 3 weeks back and over 99% of people I spoke to want the Taliban to just go..

So the growth of number of muslims in the west, does not necessarily mean that they will all vote for "sharia" or an Islamic party. I'm a muslim, and I wouldn't vote for sharia....
