I work 200 yards from the riots : would not stop me earning a crust.

It seems he wasn't a protestor, but was returning home from his job in a nearby newsagent when some over-zealous cop whacked him on the head from behind with a baton, and give him a big shove which caused him to fall over and bang his head again on the ground.

He may have been in the wrong place at the wrong time but everybody had ample warning and he was one that chose to ignore the obvious dangers.

He's not some chap who can decide to work from home that day. He works in a newsagent. If he doesn't turn up, he doesn't get paid. If you're living on newsagent wages I reckon you probably can't afford to miss a days wages.

I remember the Southall riots and a guy called Blair Peach being battered to death by police in the late 70s. I left Southall early from where I was working BEFORE those riots began that evening because a riot was expected. Perhaps I am just not as naive as some posters on here or that newsagent guy. People do get killed by our police force unfortunately and I have been assaulted by them in the past.

Incidentally, I warned a mate of mine to stay away from the City last week and he heeded my advice. No job is worth losing your life over.

I remember the Southall riots and a guy called Blair Peach being battered to death by police in the late 70s.

If memory serves it was protest at an NF rally. He was clobbered with either a rubberised radio or a lead filled baton wielded by a member of the SPG depending upon you believe. The inquest recorded death by misadventure and an inquiry is continually ruled out.

The police however failed to kill Stephen Waldorf. Though they did shoot him 5 times at close range and allegedly one officer pistol whipped him when he ran out of ammunition. They shot at him 14 times from fairly close range. Makes one worry a bit about the accuracy of firearms officers. I recall in this case 2 officers were eventually acquitted of criminal charges.

Clearly this sort of response is considered to be proportionate.
