don't want to flog the usual dead horses (thatcher, socialism) on this thread - just interested in the party, their popularity, what a tory election win would look like etc....

My problem is that nearly all of the current crop of politicians are to the public, me included, as opposite poles of a magnet. I am not drawn to any of them.
Think about it:
- unemployment heading over 3 million if it isn't already
- general disgust with the way business and political leaders have been behaving
- taxes will be heading up, a lot, regardless of what any politician says
- inflation will be heading up, a lot, regardless of what any politician says
- interest rates will be heading up, a lot, regardless of what any politician says
- ...and a widely forecast hot summer coming up.
"Civil unrest" will be putting it very mildly I think. I haven't a clue where it will all end, but I rather suspect that 2009 is a year that future economics and politics students will be focussing a lot of attention on!Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? - EpicurusComment

NO, I can definitively refute that. I wasn't personally affected as far as I can see, except in that the Thatcher administration did things that I am opposed to my government doing, and that I think are wrong. I think she made a country that I don't want to live in.Originally posted by Moscow Mule View PostI wonder if it's only people/families who were adversely affected by Thatcherite policies that hate the conservatives?
If that's the case, I wonder if Labour/Blair/Brown will be similarly hated in 10 years time?Comment

Fair enough, I suppose.Originally posted by expat View PostNO, I can definitively refute that. My viewpoint is that I don't really care what went on 15 or even 5 years ago (except for that IR35 thing
) - both Labour and Conservative are middle of the road now and you can only really decide who to vote for on a "what they will do " basis rather than any political left/right ideal.
I'll look at what each of the parties are suggesting then not bother voting as Vince Cable always gets in round my way whatever I do..."See, you think I give a tulip. Wrong. In fact, while you talk, I'm thinking; How can I give less of a tulip? That's why I look interested."Comment

I don't think so. If you were libertarian, then you would not want interference from the state to force lazy feckers to pull their weight. If you were socialist then you would want everyone looked after, but to get them to pull their weight you would have to tell them how to live their life.Originally posted by gingerjedi View PostCould there be such a thing as a 'libertarian socialist'? I don't mind the idea of everyone being looked after... as long as they're prepared to pull their bloody weight and don't tell me how I should live my life."Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. Oh and for the record Labour won't be getting my vote because of ID cards alone, let alone all the other crap about them I don't like. Who I will vote for however remains to be seen."Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave JohnsonComment

Rotten System
Other - To be frank it doesn't matter who gets in. The system is rotten.
Can anyone put their hand up and say that we live in a society where by and large people get what is merited? It's a common myth put out by advocates of a capitalist system.
The CEO / Board member types are taking the P**** out of the rest of society. They MP's look relatively thrifty.
No wonder people are angry.Comment
