Forced to lie!

I'm not really happy about this, but I know its the way of the contracting world.
There are 3 of us on a short term project, I was asked over a week ago if I'd stay on til May, I said yes and was told not to mention it to the other two chaps as there was not enough budget for all 3 of us.
I have since learnt that I'm the only one being kept on (- yay for me, I agree)
BUT one of the chaps asked me this morning if I'd heard about any extensions, I had to say no.
I really didn't like lying to him and its not my place to tell him what's going on, i just feel really bad about not telling him the truth.

I just needed to whinge about this and I know that a lot of you will laugh and just say I'm being a bit daft

Personally, (and I hate lying), I'd have said :

Other Chap : "Have you heard anything about contract extensions ?"

BGG : "I'm sorry, but I cannot comment on that issue"

You wouldn't have lied, and at the same, haven't told him anything.

If you lie to others but you dont have intention to hurt any body and your just lieing because you know if you tell the truth either your gonna get in to trouble or people will misunderstand you so does that get counted as a lie and will you get punish [but your not doing any harm by not telling].

Islam is very clear on the severity of lying. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said in a famous Hadith that the act which leads to the fire of Hell is lying.
Moreover, Islam abhors all forms of lying; a small lie or a big lie. Once a person in the presence of the Prophet wanted to call a small child nearby to him and told the child that he had something for him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told the man that if he didn’t give something to the child, he would be a liar. In other words, lying in its smallest form too is a sin in Islam.

Integrity is one thing you should never compromise. You should have told your colleague the truth.

He could then have sabotaged the project and bad mouthed you to the client which would have resulted in all three of you being sacked and a replacement being brought in. You would have been so angry that you would have been shaking, leading you to have a major smash on the motorway on the way home, hubby would blame you which is the last thing you need and the arguments would be titanic leading to divorce proceedings and loss of the house. The guinea pigs would be thrown onto the street to fend for themselves.

One little lie though could lead to habitual lieing. Lieing for fun, for recreation, even lieing for kicks. Tell him he's going to be renewed! You might as well, you dirty liar!

I think next time my customer tells me not to mention it to the rest of the team, I'll say "I wont mention it to them, but if they ask me a direct question I wont lie".

My take is that with the above scenario you were supressing the truth - you did know as you had been informed therefore that is a distortion of reality and therefore a lie.

Would it have been better to say - you should ask X about the situation , as he seems to know the situtation - after all what if Mr X is being untruthful himself ?
