Its an excellent return with compounding losses.

£500 to my pension. Rather more to public sector pensions. Only the first is optional.

Indeed. It's like setting fire to banknotes. I’m paying in about 500 euros a month to a pension plus about 1500 a month into my savings account/war chest plus I have some Dutch government bonds. Needless to say, the savings account and the bonds have outperformed the pension fund by a very large margin. I don’t think I’m going to bother with ‘expert financial advice’ any more.

Well you lot better have lots of kids then. You might need to sell 1 or 2 later on.
I don't understand - surely most IT contractors in the UK are Ltd? Then you should have big fat pensions.
                Bored.

If you don't understand why, there's no hope for you.

Good on you. Stick £100K a yr in your pension pot and retire rich.

                  Good luck.

It appears this this board is somewhat clued up on the fact that pensions are pointless (I hope it's that rather than laziness).

In some ways it is actually a good time to invest in pensions of sorts - the stock markets are cheap - but getting cheaper, though in the long term they will rise.

I haven't put anything into a pension for over 5 years. It may be a great tax avoidance opportunity but my main purpose of working/saving is to provide a better life to my family, not to myself. I want to be able to leave something behind for them after I am gone. So I invest rather than put money into pensions - I choose to own property, dividend yielding shares, premium bonds even. These will provide income during my lifetime, and when I pass on, these assets will be left to my kids to help them build their lives with.

Pensions - unless they are employer funded and final salary - are a huge lie.

I like to be in control of my own money
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”
