But Sheffield is an utter pain in the backside to get to from the North East

It is? I thought the main train from Edinburgh to Penzance (which stops at Newcastle and Durham and Darlington) went through it? I used to pass Sheffield when coming up to university in Durham from Cornwall, but that was a few years back.

Actually you're right - I've just checked on thetrainline and it only takes a couple of hours. I used to think it took forever to get there!!!
I think nothing of going to Manchester or London or Edinburgh...but for some reason I think Sheffield is so far away!!

I think you mean Doncaster.

Sheffield only has a train service at all because of Blunkett.
