My wife is a teacher (but currently not working as she is looking after our kids). She would turn up at school, even if it was closed for snow, because I could make it into work and we shared the drive (Ripon to Harrogate - muderous if any sort of snow).

It is the school heads who close schools on advice of the Health and Safty gurus in the council. They have to do this because too many parents will sue if little Wayne or Waynetta even scratch there hand.

DO NOT BLAME TEACHERS - although there are always bad ones.

    Rant over.

But.... when I was adopted, my social worker was great. We kept in touch until I was about 10 or 11 so I know there are good ones out there - just as well as there are tulip ones.
A lot of good fathers who split from their partners do get a raw deal. The law is an ar*e and is normally biased towards the mother. There are a few bad mothers out there that shouldn't have kids. Some women have kids so that they can sponge of the benefits system and not have to go into work. And some women want custody of the kids so that they can get the ex-partners to pay for their livestyles.

Am not saying this from experience.... but I am glad that I am single.

I know a lot of teachers (10 or so) and I can't think of one who doesn't love their job, and isn't doing it for the right reasons. Probably my peer-group is not average but regardless teaching is too hard a job to do it as an easy option, especially if you are teaching secondary school (I can't see how anyone would take that job).

Also, teaching certainly isn't job security. Many schools have stopped giving out permanent contracts, instead you are on a rolling contract each year/term.

What's with the hatred for social services btw? I knew a few people training in this direction and all were lovely, deeply caring people, not the process-obsessed stereotypes.

Is it just that people on CUK who have dealt with SS have all been on the 'receiving end' due to divorces, custody battles? Because that's not all they do. They're also the ones who have to go and interact with the real dregs of familyhood - would you want to go and talk to violent druggy chavs about their parenting skills? Takes guts.

I don't really hold a view on SS, other than what I see on TV. However, when I use to claim JSA's, the quality of service I use to get was pretty poor. No Value Add.... the staff just never gave a damn in helping people with getting work. However, I don't have a personal experience view on those who do most of the hard work.

Does your job have working rules about not allowing your client to get between you and the door?

Teachers are notoriously work shy. Six weeks off in the summer, hours of 8.30-3.00, apples everyday and presents from the kids every end of term.

GET OUT OF BED YOU WORK SHY LAYABOUTS!
                Utter bollocks.

Funny how people just read the headline...

I had interactions with social services at one time, when they intervened in my wife's brother's family, as he was beating on his kids. I found them to be caring people, trying to do a good job in difficult circumstances. But generally not very bright, not good at doing things properly, and not much initiative. I'd imagine that it's hard to attract high quality staff when their so much stigma attached and the wages are so lousy.

It's the SS system that stinks - not the workers themselves.
