If you haven't deferred it before, then you write and ask for a deferrment. Explain that you run your own business, and that it's a crucial time etc. etc. and they may let you off. You will need to give them dates in the next year when it will be convenient for you to do it, and they will call you then.
Alternatively, shred the letter and don't turn up.
Alternatively, do the jury duty (as you really should) and claim on your jury insurance so that you aren't too out of pocket.
BTW - what's with everyone getting called up for jury duty at the moment - there seems to be loads of similar threads on CUK recently...

Just been on PCG to check how much i can claim as part of my insurance. It was worth joining them when i went limited last year!!!

That would only work if there was only one trial - instead, you'll just have to wait for another one to start up, with nothing to do.
Knowing anyone involved in the case gets you off that particular panel, but not out of jury duty itself.
There was a situation with a lawyer / judge that was called and tried to get out of it because he knew everyone involved in the first four or five cases. He still had to wait until they found a trial he could do...
