It's not the poverty, it's the acceptance of it as normal, and the poverty of spirit that goes with it. Not the bus being late but the fact that nobody gives a tulip. Not the dirt and litter but the lack of self-respect, and respect for others and the environment, that breeds it.

Things have got so bad the centre-piece for the new shopping mall is to be a three storey Primark and boy, you should have heard the councillors and the local rag rave about what a great thing it was for the town.
Reminds of my hometown. A few years ago developers ripped down the ice rink and a few other buildings to make way for what was promised to be a flagship retail store in the heart of thriving, metropolitan, Brighton.
