Meta-study shows religious people are less intelligent
"Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny. "
I think Churchy might take a bite out of my leg if I dared try !
(And Mrs BGG as well) :-)
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
What a reputable survey. And hardly a big difference in results. I know morons who are atheists and a very well regarded professor of cosmology (black holes etc) who believes the bible to be the true word of God.
And I never heard that myth before. Did they make it up as an excuse to do the survey? Many famous scientists are Christians but that's not the same as saying most of them are.
And, are we equating intelligence with wealth? Those who know the most how the universe works are probably those who earn peanuts as researchers at universities, not arrogant middle managers who drive BMWs
It's not personal. If you really believe then you must follow the rules - otherwise isn't it a kind of having your cake and eating it?
No. None of us are perfect. We try but we are only human and therefore are doomed to get it wrong, over and over again until we die.
Having faith doesn't mean that we are indistiguishable from Christ, but that we try a little harder every day not be be complete gits. Of course, gitishness is inherent in everyone from thick, unquestioning Christians to arrogant, vaccuous atheists.
It's like having our cake and trying not to eat it because that makes us gits, but failing and stuffing our faces with it anyway. And then God saying, well you were a git but it's my choice on whether I let you into heaven or not anyway. And because you believed in me and my son, and even though you were a git you at least tried to not be a git, so I'll let you into heaven.

I think you only have to read this thread to see that the conclusion in the thread title is correct
There's no point in having a cake and not eating it.
Unless you're on a diet and into mental self-flagellation.
Bless me father for I have sinned.... all sorted.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

You are mistaking religion for virtuousness aren't you? Indeed it looks like you are saying that only the religious can be virtuous, which of course is utter rubbish.

That's roughly what the tube bombers said in their video. They were trying to be less git-like.

I think that's the second time you've used that line. Nobody else has bought into it and it seems to be turning into quite an interesting debate.
You seem to be losing interest in taking the debate forward and rather more interested in ad hominem attacks and calling the debate over because you seem to believe you have somehow won.
Someone less charitable would think you were not as clever as you thought you were. I wouldn't though. I think you are very, very clever. A towering intellect that burns like the bright Light of the World!
