This country needs to make some hard choices soon, like spending cuts and even (short-term) tax rises. Trouble is we don't want to make them. The British electorate has its hands in its collective ears singing "la la la I'm not listening..."

I believe that is absolutely true.

People felt comfortable during Brown's borrowing boom, so they like his attempts to restart it. Sod the fact that it will just make the situation worse.

I'm surprised they are behind at all. I can't tell if their decisions are good or bad, but making big bold moves certainly gives Joe Public the impression of a government that is at least taking action, which is a plus when he previously views politics a mess of bureaucracy and red tape.

No. Thatcher's idea was that if Britain continued to borrow money to support loss making industries and out of control public spending, eventually the country would go bust. She perhaps went a bit far, closing some pits which could have stayed profitable, and sometimes her choices seemed as much idealogical as economic; a lot of people who lost their jobs could have been helped more effectively. However, she was working with the
knowledge avaiable at the time, and it's easy in hindsight to say what she should have done better.

We all make bold moves when we are desperate!! Unfortunately, these bold moves are too late because they dithered for a year after the liquidity issues with the Rock. Another 5 years of HMG and we will be bankrupt, but the majority live in blissful uneducated ignorance.
