And there must be something we've missed about "fail", in relation to turf, unless it's just that turf laid in the desert would fail to take, which seems a fairly pathetic and tenuous link.

I agree, "desert tur" was better. The crossword answer is wrong.

I think 'fail' is turf related or sort thereof though, a google would find it.
