      How do you get Fail?

I thought it might be Fool, which is a desert (as in strawberry fool), and turfing is a vernacular for covering something up, i.e. fooling people.

                  That's a dessert.

So, something like "South in desert turf" But I still don't get why fail is the answer to the original.

                    His strength deserted him.
                    His strength failed him.

That would cover the "desert" bit ok.

"Turf" is slang for "to displace or eject", which could mean fail I suppose. As in "turf out the poor performers"?

Good point. No wonder no-one else thought of it.
