That’s a different matter, and I agree that exploitation of migrant workers should be stopped. The best way to stop it is to treat those workers as equals with the same rights as the rest of us to be protected against dangerous conditions and lack of insurance. As long as they’re scared to report the mistreatment to the authorities for fear of being deported, they can be exploited.

Anyway, if you’ve grown up in the UK with free education, subsidized higher education, the open university, training colleges in every town, free healthcare, clean water and plenty to eat, you shouldn’t be scared of being pushed out of your job by someone whose only skill is picking strawberries, because you should have got yourself qualified to do something better. The opportunities were and are still there.

Effectively, this means that in Western Europe we will always need immigrants to do the jobs that we don’t want to do. That’s OK with me as long as those people get the same legal rights as the rest of us, so that we can’t continue exploiting them for the sake of cheap food, and they might also have the chance to work themselves up the ladder. That doesn’t mean the country’s going to get massively overcrowded; people leave, and people die. There’s a fair chance lots of people will leave the UK in the coming years to find employment in other countries. I did it, and it’s been good for me. I’d rather emigrate to a decent job and a chance to stand on my own two feet than sit around on the dole whining about immigrants, because I’m not a weak-willed, whining halfwit racist who thinks the world owes me some great privilege for being born with the right nationality.

Shut up, you pudding! You HAVE worked in IT, haven't you? Right. So riddle me this: how many imported IT staff members do you know that do the job better than their British colleagues? I have worked with many and my answer is "one". That's not to say they are worse; just no better. So, why are they here? They are cheap and often fearful of working less than 25 hours per day, lest they be sent packing. So, there's a non-strawberry picking trade that will, in all probability, engender ill will and BNP-type votes next election. There will be more.

There is no absolute freedom of speech. There are restrictions on what is permitted to be said in a free society. The exercise of free speech is within an environment of competing values - i.e. when such exercise violates other rights.

Well said. British jobs for British workers, I say. If we need some from other countries to fill genuine gaps, fine, but let's put ourselves first for a change. There should never be a British person on the dole with a foreigner doing his job!!!!

I see them here in NL. They’re all tulip and none of them speak comprehensible English, with very few exceptions. That’s why the client is progressively chucking them out and replacing them with Europeans. The mirage of an endless supply of cheap Indian geniuses was exactly that, but it takes the average manager quite some time to realise that, because the average manager has the brains of a fruit fly. Also, salaries in India are rising very fast; another few years and the price differential will be irrelevant. Outsourcing has failed, and companies are slowly starting to realise that it’s actually more cost effective to have local people who understand each other and the business working together at one location than putting your business at the mercy of an incident ticket at the helpdesk at some outsourcing company in a third world country.

CUK member rules section 49 iii

A member will automatically lose an argument should Cybertory agree with them.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

Er, not what I meant! What I meant was that the economy's reliance on cheap and skilled migrants is perfect for the BNP and their ilk; if Kev Chav is on the dole, sure he'll blame the immigrants, but he'd be out of work anyway; if Mr. C++ gets elbowed-out because his employer has hired "temporary" foreign staff for a "short-term" project (which simply mutates into another such project) and on the cheap, then Mr.C++ has, in effect, been baited and tempted into the dark world of the BNP.
