Gosh. I'd forgotten (assuming I ever knew of it) about the Welsh connection with the "assassination" attempt. The owner of a carpet business, the owner of a club and dealer in fruit machines, plus a chap who printed t shirts.Originally posted by DoctorStrangelove View PostNext: "Jeremy Thorpe: a secret life" by Lewis Chester, Magnus Linklater, and David May, being the rise & fall of said politico.
Done: off to Oxfam with it. Next: "Secret intelligence in the 20th Century" Constantine Fitzgibbon: well the first 75 years of it since it's a 1976 book.Last edited by DoctorStrangelove; 26 April 2025, 19:59.When the fun stops, STOP.Comment

I read novels interspersed with the non fiction stuff.
For some reason the current Railway Detective novel* has stalled, much like "The Night Manager" did some months ago.
*There's another 9 or 10 in the series but I have no intention of seeking them out. Similarly I wish I hadn't started on the late Le Carre oeuvre** though I may seek out the latest Smiley.
** Other than "A legacy of spies" which features both Peter Guillam and George Smiley (who must have been at least 115 in it).Last edited by DoctorStrangelove; 29 April 2025, 15:26.When the fun stops, STOP.Comment

Moved on to Star Wars: Mask of Fear that came out recently. Set in the prequal period and has the same vibe and feel of Andor if you are currently enjoying that show on Disney+ (and like Star Wars, obviously)Comment

Done: off to Oxfam with it. He was a Septic who joined the British Army before the Septics came in (late as ever), then transferred to the US Army. Worked in Bletchley doing something or other. Was not impressed by "The Ultra Secret" by F. W. Winterbotham.Originally posted by DoctorStrangelove View PostNext: "Secret intelligence in the 20th Century" Constantine Fitzgibbon: well the first 75 years of it since it's a 1976 book.
Next: "There's Lovely" by Johnny Morris. Well there's tidy then. Dunno why the print is so small, I almost need two pairs of specs.
Reminded me of the 6 pt printout some ginger oik did at Scantronic.Last edited by DoctorStrangelove; 10 May 2025, 11:25.When the fun stops, STOP.Comment

Next: "Starburst" by Alfred Bester. Another anthology, many of the stories also appearing in "Star light, Star Bright" and "The light fantastic" which should make it a quick read.Last edited by DoctorStrangelove; 19 May 2025, 22:26.When the fun stops, STOP.Comment

Can't say I'm a real fan of his, though he didn't write much all in all. Unlike Asimov. Or Anderson.Last edited by DoctorStrangelove; 7 July 2025, 12:58.When the fun stops, STOP.Comment
