I was with you most of the way, but I have to point out, the Bible does contain some great literature. The Old Testament contains some amazing poetry, as indeed does some of (attributed to) Paul's writing in the New Testament. The beauty of some of the writing (not all) is such that even in translation it comes across very well.

1 Corinthians 13 and the book of Job immediately spring to mind as prime examples.

We may not like/believe/consider important/find easy to read what's written, but there's no denying that it is, for the most part, well written. Not semi-illiterate at all. To say otherwise shows profound ignorance.

But then, what do I know? I think the Silmarillion is a great piece of literature as well. And Crime and Punishment.

they said all western literature has its origin or was inspired by the bible - I agree with NAT here!! Bible is a fascinating read.

Am going to be faced with this dilemma shortly. It's a route I refuse to go down on principle.

Well done that man. Stick by them. Shame on you Rootsnall you just perpetuate the problem.

I recommend (regardless of the school your little one ends up in) getting yourself on the governing body - that way you can really make a difference if you need to.
