How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Never worked in IB but don't need to in order to have a rough idea what shorting etc is - NB I have not extrapolated this into me thinking I am George Soros. There is no poll option for me.

Did some technical risk stuff last year. Learnt a lot from the people in the various business units.

Of course, now I'm broke after taking their advice...

Yeah sorry, forgot the 'humourless dolt' option.

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

You did indeed, although humourless is being a little kind really

I've had 5 contracts with IB's so far. In Front/Middle Office upgrades and new web projects I had to sit with traders who seemed to be getting younger and more arrogant as the years went by. Nevertheless, most were pretty good at their jobs and as good as gold in the pubs and bars outside work. One thing that I've learnt from them is that no matter how much you know or learnt through college or experience, it won't help you when dealing with the ups or downs of the markets, otherwise, if you can't make decisions in an instant, you won't get the deals. A lot is based on hunches not logic and there is a definite herd mentality which explains a lot. Hence buying and selling is not for the faint hearted or self-opinionated, so eg AtW will never make any money out of it.

I did some IB work back in Russia - back in 1998. The Govt defaulted on its bonds, currency dropped 4 times in matter of weeks, banks folded etc. That's when I figured - f*** that s*** and went back to UK and stayed here ever since. The lesson I learnt was that if you want to gamble (I don't) then go to casino.
